'I was feeling pretty gnarly': Ed Sheeran reveals he's 'at the other side' of his battle with Covid - but admits he SLEPT through his album's release

Ed Sheeran has revealed he's 'at the other side' of his battle with Covid after being forced to cancel all his in-person work commitments.

The hitmaker, 30, said he was feeling 'pretty gnarly', but with plenty of rest he's on the mend after revealing on Sunday he'd tested positive for the virus.

But despite his recovery, Ed confessed that he struggled to fulfil his tradition of staying up for the release of his albums, and instead slept through the midnight launch of his latest effort =.

Speaking to Zoe Ball on her Radio 2 Breakfast Show, Ed said: 'I think I'm getting to the other side of it. The beginning of the week was pretty gnarly but I just drunk a lot of water and slept a lot and had all the vitamins that the doctor told me to have.

'But yeah, it's the first time I didn't stay up for an album release. I tried and then I was just like, ''you know what I need some sleep and went to bed and got a good night's sleep'' and I was up bright and early.'

On Sunday Ed announced that he'd be cancelling any in-person performances and appearances after testing positive for Covid.

Writing on Instagram the star said he planning to fulfil as many interviews and appearances as he could while isolating at his home in Suffolk.

Following the release of his new album, Ed was blazing the promotional trail with a slew of radio interviews, and also chatted to Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden on the Heart Breakfast Show.

During the chat he confessed that in the past he's dressed up as superheroes to attend concerts and events to avoid being recognised.

He said: 'I used to go to festivals as Spider Man, my friends who are a wonderful, wonderful people, know that I can't do certain things, so they were like, one year we should just go as superheroes to a festival, you can dress up as Spider Man, it will look like we're on a stag do, and we can actually go and watch the gigs.

'So I went in a crowd for the first time in like, seven or eight years at that time.

'I actually turned up at, I was playing the Rogers Centre Stadium in Toronto and next door there was a Comic Con and I had the Spiderman outfit, and I was like ''I'm going to go to Comic Con.''

'And I went to Comic Con and kind of got dragged into the Spider Man crowd, so there were all these people dressed as Spiderman, so there's a picture of me and like twenty Spidermen at Comic Con, and I'm kind of there.

'And people are like asking to take pictures with me, because I'm Spiderman, not because I'm me, it's great.'

During a chat on Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp, Ed also reflected on his decision to cut back on booze, because he feared being unable to take his wife Cherry Seaborn to the hospital, when she went into labour with their daughter Lyra.

He said: 'I was acting like a 25-year-old when Cherry was pregnant and there was a time where I just thought, you know what, if I’m blasted and her water breaks, and I don’t get to the hospital, I will never ever, never ever forgive myself.

'That was the moment, this was like three months before Lyra was born and I just stopped everything.'

When host Roman asked if Ed ever received a 'dressing down' from his wife, the hitmaker added: 'Uhm no never because she’s always been, she’s pretty sound, she knows I’m quite an anxious person so I’ll beat myself up way more than someone else would and way before someone else would and I would give myself the dressing down. I would spend days and days hating myself.'

Ed will also appear on Saturday's Jonathan Ross Show via. video link, after being unable to visit the studio in person.

During the chat the Bad Habits singer, whose album = (Equals) was released on Friday, explained how quickly he pens some of his iconic tracks.

He told Jonathan: 'I actually know the hits are the ones that are written very very quickly. Shape of you was under an hour, Perfect was under an hour, I remember all of them being so quick because I remember barely thinking just typing.

'18 was different I sort of had the lyrics already written for than and the song kind of came, but with Perfect, the melody and lyrics came at the same time while singing over the guitar. If you speak to any singer/songwriter, some songs just come out of midair.'

Tune in to Heart Breakfast with Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden weekdays from 6:30am and Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp from 6am. The Jonathan Ross Show airs Saturday at 10pm on ITV and ITV Hub.
