Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon on their shows Monday night homed in on the 'Judas and the Black Messiah' Oscar winner's quip about his parents while his mom was in the audience.
Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon had some fun with Daniel Kaluuya's Oscar acceptance speech sex joke on their shows on Monday night.
Accepting the Oscar for best supporting actor for his role in Judas and the Black Messiah on Sunday, Kaluuya said in a much-discussed moment, "We're enjoying ourselves tonight ... We've got to celebrate life, man. We're breathing, we're walking, it's incredible. It's incredible, like, it's incredible. My mum and my dad, they had sex, it's amazing, do you know what I'm saying? Like, I'm here," to some gasps and laughter. His mother, who was sitting in the audience, was filmed looking confused and then putting her head in her hand. "I'm so happy to be alive, so I'm going to celebrate that tonight," Kaluuya added.
Noah, in his Monday-night monologue, homed in on the moment: "Did this guy just say 'sex' in front of his African mother? Yo, let me tell you something. Forget saying 'my parents had sex,' just to say 'sex' in front of African parents will be instantly rewarded by an a-- whupping of monumental proportions, people." He added, "You can't be saying 'sex' in front of African parents. In fact, I'm sure the only reason she didn't whup Daniel's a-- right there is because there were too many white people in attendance."
Noah joked about himself, "In fact, that's the only reason I'm staying in America. All the white people make me feel safe. Because if I go home, my mom is going to beat me because she sent me to the shop to buy bread but instead I bought a lollipop. Mommy, please!"
The Late Show commemorated the moment by producing a fake news segment whose chyron at one point read, "Kaluuya Thanks Parents' Sex Life." The news reporter then intoned, "But this wasn't the first time an Oscar winner thanked their parents for having sex." A suite of audio-doctored famous Oscar speeches ensued, with Gregory Peck talking about how his parents "got it on," Barbra Streisand and Sally Field doing much the same, followed by Toy Story's Woody making an off-color comparison to a "snake in his boot."
Fallon also played the moment in his opening Tonight Show monologue on Monday. "His mom's like, 'What did he ... what are you talking about?' She's the best. His mom's like, 'This is so embarrassing.' And he's like, 'Relax, no one saw it.'"
Backstage after his speech on Sunday night, Kaluuya said of his joke, "It just came out of my mouth. My mom is probably going to text me. I really shouldn’t have said that. I am trying to avoid my phone for a bit. She is not going to be very happy."
He then added, "She has a great sense of humor. She is going to be cool."
