She has stolen fans' hearts as Penelope Featherington on Bridgerton.
But Nicola Coughlan revealed that she was completely unaware of the biggest twist involving her character until after she was hired.
The 33-year-old, who hails from Galway, dished to Variety that she discovered Penelope's big secret by reading an online fan thread.

At the end of season one, which dropped on Netflix on Christmas Day, Penelope is unveiled as none other than Lady Whistledown.
Lady Whistledown is the pen name of the author of a gossip newsletter that frequently roils the high society of Regency England.
Nicola, who was also a fan favorite as a gay Northern Irish schoolgirl during the Troubles in Derry Girls, got candid about her Bridgerton audition to Variety.
'When I went for the first audition, I only had a couple of days to prepare; I didn’t have time to read the books or do anything like that. I just thought: "I’ll give this a go and if I get a second call, then I’ll read everything,"' she confessed.

'But that didn’t happen, I just got the job. So then it was like: "I’d better read these books and figure out who this character is."'
By 'the books' Nicola was referring to the Bridgerton series of romance novels by Julia Quinn, who specializes in period pieces.
Nicola shared: 'I also went to a lot of the fan forums online, because these books have been out for 20 years. People adore them and have such a connection to them. Penelope is really close to their hearts. It was on a forum that I realized she was Lady Whistledown. When I saw it, I thought, "No, no, no, no, that can’t be right."
She said: 'I kept re-reading it, because it didn’t make sense: [I’m] being given this amazing role in a Shondaland-Netflix show, and it’s that role. It’s quite mind-blowing.'

Bridgerton the series was produced by Shonda Rhimes and created by Chris Van Dusen who worked for her on Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice and Scandal.
Whilst chatting with Variety Nicola also gushed that 'It was so much fun,' filming Penelope's reveal as Lady Whistledown.
'We had to film that in the middle of COVID. I had to be super, super secret. I had to be flown over from Ireland, and tested and tested and tested, and do the fitting.'
She remembered: 'It was hyper secret; I couldn’t let anyone know I was there or what was going on. But it was so much fun to film that.'
